Working in Home Care – It’s Not Just a Paycheck


Working in home care is not just a job. As someone who has worked in the Home Health field since 1986, I can truly say it is my passion. I get great joy out of being able to help the elderly in our community in their time of need.


The great Maya Angelou once said,


“I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.


Our goal in homecare every day is to make an impact on how our clients feel. To make people feel cared for, important, worthwhile and purposeful in their lives, no matter how limited their medical conditions may make them feel.

Our clients may forget we took their blood pressure. They may forget we gave them a bath. They may forget we answered their questions. But, they will never forget how reassuring it feels to be told their blood pressure is fine. How good it feels to be clean. How connected they feel when we listen to them. How worthy they feel to have someone care and try to make them smile every time we interact with them.


Working in the home care sector, there are many ways we can care for our clients, even if we never step foot in their home. As a team, each person has a role to play in providing a seamless service which provides our clients with the right care they need, at the right time. This care may be initiated by our clerical staff who answer the phones, our IT staff who ensure our systems are running smoothly, our care coordinators who meet with clients and families to set-up care, or our many care providers who work in the field doing home visits, such as nurses, PSWs, and therapists. Each member of our team has specific skill sets and roles which help us work together to achieve the ultimate goal of providing excellent home care service to our clients.


Not matter what role we play, it is actually a privilege to become part of our clients’ lives in a manner which helps them live, despite their health challenges, in a meaningful, dignified and self-directed manner. Many of us feel very lucky to be able to help someone else feel good, every single day.


When you have a client call in and tell you they are very pleased with your agency and the staff you have coming to their home to help them, it makes you feel great to have the job you do and work for such a great company. I consider our clients to be like family and want to make sure they get the best care possible. To me, this is the most important aspect of homecare. We will continue to work hard to ensure this happens with every single client, at every single encounter.




The reason is simple - we want them to remember how we make them feel.
